Time for another artistic alphabetical foray. I am drawing characters from literary sources every week for AlphaBooks.
W is for Whale. This particular sea mammal was only recently brought into existence, along with the bowl of petunias, a few miles above an alien planet.
The whale and the bowl of petunias were originally guided nuclear missiles on a collision course with the spaceship Heart of Gold. That is, until Arthur Dent hit the button initializing the Infinite Improbability Drive on the ship. He had intended to stave off the annihilation of the Heart of Gold. No one could have predicted that it would turn the missiles into a sperm whale and a bowl of petunias. But, that's what happened, improbably.
As the whale plummeted to its doom, it became self-aware but sadly had very little time to come to grips with its existence before it met its new friend, the ground.
These events and characters sprung forth from the mind of Douglas Adams in his radioplay-turned-novel, The Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Pencil sketch.
