Time for another artistic alphabetical foray. I am drawing characters from literary sources every week for AlphaBooks!
P is for Puss in Boots. He may look cute. He may look friendly. But make no mistake . . . this cat is a conniving, scheming little fuzzball.
Puss in Boots was written by Charles Perrault in the late 17th century. The story was popular with children despite a protagonist lacking all scruples and honesty. Instead of a hero known for his good deeds, Puss in Boots lies, cheats and steals to get his master a better life.
The original French tale only mentions Puss wearing boots. Because of a lot of early illustrations by artists who obviously weren't paying attention to the story, Puss has been commonly accepted to have worn a hat, cape and sword. Not on my watch!
